SHECHINAH: The Church
actually
started as a church restart; many of the people that helped kick this
concept off were from our old identity known as Southwest Christian
Church (est. 1978). Here's what happened...
Have you ever
gotten just sick of what you've seen in church? Ever been hurt by
the politics that take place? Yeah, well we didn't necessarily see
that in our particular body of believers, but we did have this heart-wrenching
pain when we heard friends, family members, and others express these
feelings. We took a look around and started to examine the whole,
universal church. No, not from the inside - but from the outside looking
in. What we found was not something that we were particularly interested
in prolonging.
So, we made a change. We wanted to become a new
body committed to a new purpose. We were tired of being a people group
that preached and talked about this abundant life and weren't living
it. We wanted to admit that we all at some point were screwed up and
we were still on this journey to find out more about God. We wanted
to stop trying to cram an obnoxious message down people's throats and
we wanted to start trying to really do the things Jesus asked us to do.
So,
on January 30, Southwest Christian Church abandoned its building and
moved on to remodel their church. We're not just talking about cosmetic
changes here - we're talking about heart and soul changes. At the
end of February, we became a new family and
Shechinah: The Church was
born.
It's been a wild
ride so far and we continue to learn new things about how God has
wired this particular group of people that meet in a building in
Southwest Boise. We definitely have figured out that we don't
have it figured out. But we're taking the leap and believing
that God is real and His promises are real. We want to be
transformed not just spiritually, but that this spiritual formation
would begin to overflow into every aspect of our lives.
That is our story.
It's still being written...
